Williamsport Soccer Complex - Coming off of a rough showing at Lewisburg last week, the Williamsport boys' soccer team earned another tally in the win column last night at their home complex. As a light mist fell throughout most of the game, both keepers were tested. It was Williamsport, however, who took advantage of solid midfield play and scored first, midway through the first half.
"Jersey Shore is a tough team; they're physical. I'm glad to see our guys stepped up tonight and were aggressive from the first whistle," commented coach Kaar after the game. The Millionaire midfielders and forwards kept pressure on the Bulldog back line by working the ball deep into their offensive third, causing Jersey Shore to constantly work hard to clear the ball. Junior midfielder Jimmy Pombor netted the game's only goal when he received a pass near the top of the eighteen, eluded two defenders, and buried his shot in to the back of the far post.
After the break, Jersey Shore was able to penetrate into Williamsport's defense, but senior keeper Elliott Wannop quickly deflected the close-range shot, keeping the one-goal lead for the Millionaires. The Bulldogs began to gain some momentum late in the second half, but the Williamsport middies and defenders were able to keep Jersey Shore from having any great looks at the net again. Williamsport had a great effort from so many guys tonight as the win brings them back up to five and five on the year.
The Millionaires travel to Montoursville Wednesday night, under the lights, to test their skills against the Warriors.
