Millionaires Edge Ironmen

Danville, PA - Williamsport traveled to Danville for their first away game this season for their second consecutive game under lights.  While the Millionaires came away with a victory, they know the level of play needs to improve.  "We definitely didn't make it easy on ourselves by not utilizing the entire width of the pitch tonight, we need to do a better job at using what the opponent is giving us," noted coach Kaar.  He continued, "It wasn't necessarily one of our better games, but I don't think we played poorly either.  We need to continue to work hard and improve upon on how we transition through the middle third of the pitch."

The Millionaires nearly had an early lead as they had two decent looks at the goal inside the eighteen in the first three minutes of the game, but weren't able to capitalize on either occasion.  After that, both teams had their opportunities around the edge of the box, but neither team saw a great look as most shots sailed over the crossbar or right to a keeper.  The first half ended in a scoreless tie.

Williamsport began the second half with some crucial energy.  With less than five minutes ticking off the clock, Williamsport pressured Danville's back line and keeper two more times.  Finally, at the 36:27-mark, junior Jimmy Pombor carved his way through several defenders and fired a shot that ricocheted off of a Danville defender's leg for the first goal of the game.  Five minutes later, Williamsport keeper collected a cross from the Ironmen and launched it towards midfield where sophomore Zach Lake brought it down with one touch and delivered a pass to Pombor.  Pombor guided the ball to the right edge of the box and blistered a shot up and over the Danville keeper for the two-goal lead.

After being down by two, Danville seemed to then experience their own spark of energy though and pressured Williamsport back in their defensive third of the pitch.  Williamsport was called for a foul just outside the box and the Ironmen capitalized on that opportunity to cut the lead in half.  For the last twenty minutes, both teams had their moments of possession and average looks at the net, but neither team took advantage and the game ended with a 2-1 score, in Williamsport's favor.  "It was a physical game.  I thought our defensive group worked hard tonight - they played well," noted Kaar.

Williamsport's JV team lost a close game earlier in the evening, 0-1.  The Millionaires are back in action this Saturday at the Williamsport Soccer Complex as they host state powerhouse, Lewisburg.
