Dragons Hold on to Beat the Millionaires

Williamsport Soccer Complex - As Saturday afternoon provided the perfect weather for a soccer match in Williamsport, the Millionaires and state powerhouse Lewisburg Green Dragons offered up a pretty solid matchup for the fans in attendance.  Lewisburg came into the contest undefeated and Williamsport entered Saturday's League contest fresh off a victory on Thursday night.

Lewisburg flexed thier muscles for most of the first half as they controlled the pace of play and pressed the Millionaires deep into their defensive third of the pitch.  Ten minutes into the game, the defensive unit for Williamsport gave Lewisburg senior Ben Liscum enough space for him to fire off a quality shot.  The ball whistled into the net for an early one goal advantage for the visitors.  "I thought our back line and keeper actually played well today.  We lost focus for a brief moment in the first half and they were able to capitalize on that. Lewisburg has too many weapons all over the pitch and we knew it was going to take a full eighty minutes of intense energy and focus," commented coach Kaar after the game.

The second half began with the Green Dragons continuing to fire long range shots at the goal, but Williamsport senior keeper Elliott Wannop was able to collect those without too much difficulty.  Also, Williamsport did have the benefit of the post deflecting a ball out of the goal behind Wannop.  The Millionaires gained a little momentum in the second half as they were able to have spurts of possession in their offensive half.  Senior Thomas Harper sent in a long range shot that just missed the crossbar and minutes later, sophomore Owen Kaar sent a free kick towards the box from 40 yards out where senior Tyler Fausnaught got a head on it, but, unfortunately, wasn't able to generate enough power towards the goal.  Williamsport junior Jimmy Pombor and the offensive cast of Angelo Casas, Zach Lake, and Hemberth Pena-Vasquez did penetrate Lewisburg's back line on occasion, but weren't able to connect on any of those opportunities.

Kaar noted, "We didn't get the result we wanted today, but all of our guys stepped onto the pitch ready to go - we had the energy and we were aggressive.  If we continue to put in that effort each game, good things will happen for us."

Sophomore Jett Johnson was the lone goal scorer for the Millionaires in the second game, but it wasn't enough as the JV team lost their game as well.

It doesn't get any easier for the boys as Williamsport will battle Selinsgrove and Midd-West this week.
