The Wolfpack from Wilkes-Barre entered the District 2-4 AAAA semifinal with one of their standout players recently eclipsing the 100 goals scored earlier in the week.  Wilkes-Barre's 'three-headed' offensive monster of Nilon, Portee, and Berry seemed poised to pick apart the Williamsport midfield and defense, but a solid effort by the Millionaire midfielders and back line, and a few timely saves by keeper Elliott Wannop gave the boys in red a different idea for the outcome.

"We were really pleased with how we played the first half.  Our back line and midfield were strong, which allowed our attack to become more threatening," noted coach Kaar just before the second half began.  While the game remained scoreless at the break, Williamsport seemed to be the aggressors of the first forty as they were able to get behind Wilkes-Barre's back line on occasion.  Kaar continued, "Obviously we would like to come away with a goal or two, but we liked the fact that the guys created multiple opportunities in the final third of the pitch.  Wilkes-Barre couldn't key on one guy; we had several zipping around the eighteen while we were able to continue to work the ball into the channels as well as for the far-post runs."  Still, with Williamsport utilizing some excellent off-ball runs, the Millionaires were not able to capitalize on them in the first half.  

Whatever adjustments Wilkes-Barre made during the break, they seemed to help as the Wolfpack gained some momentum early in the half.  The three forwards from Wilkes-Barre, who have caused havoc on so many opponents this year, were beginning to find their groove.  "We didn't see Wilkes-Barre really make any tactical changes to start the second half, so it was just a matter of our defense (lead by Tyler Fausnaught, Michael Collyer, and Evan Beiter) forcing their forwards to make a negative pass," one Williamsport coach stated after the game, and then said, "Those three had a strong game today."  

The second half of the game also saw its fair share of warnings as four Yellow cards were issued (two to each team) for various fouls.  Those cautions didn't interrupt the Williamsport attack though as their midfielders and forwards continued to put pressure on the Wolfpack middies and defenders.  Finally, with less than ten minutes remaining in the game, sophomore midfielder Owen Kaar found space to deliver a pass to junior midfielder Jimmy Pombor, who eluded several defenders inside the eighteen before burying a shot in the side netting, giving Williamsport the one goal advantage.  

The final minutes of the game were frantic as Wilkes-Barre made a few desperate attempts towards the Millionaire goal.  With less than a minute to play, the Wolfpack earned two corner kicks, but the defense held its ground and cleared both attempts to secure the victory.

Williamsport travels to Delaware Valley, who earned the #1 seed, and disposed of Wyoming Valley West in the other District 2-4 semifinal.  The District II/IV Class 4A Championship game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 on Friday, November 6th.
