Connor Poole records hat trick as Williamsport boys defeat Mifflin County 4-0
So when the team got together and talked during its halftime break, the coaches and captains all talked to the team, and the message was simple: intensity.
The Millionaires wanted to come out in the second half fired up and with intensity and get something working offensively early.
That talked more than sparked the team.
It took just 40 seconds into the second half for Williamsport to strike when Tarell Brown rifled a shot to put the Millionaires up by two and from there, things kept rolling.
It resulted in Williamsport cruising past Mifflin County, 4-0, to improve to 2-0 on the year.
“Coaches talked, captains talked. Some of it is just having that confidence in themselves. They’ve proven it in training sessions and scrimmages and now it’s just coming out and putting it into practice during games. But we’re very pleased wtih the intensity level,” Williamsport coach Lee Kaar said. “It kind of fell off the last seven, eight minutes there, but up four, we had a plethora of guys in.”
Calder Diakite fed Brown a pass inside the 18 and Brown sent it to the right post to give the Millionaires a 2-0 lead. Fourteen minutes later, Williamsport struck again when Connor Poole was awarded a penalty kick and scored as he snuck it inside the left post past a diving Mifflin County goalie.
“They didn’t have any real threatening possessions in the first half, but we stressed at halftime ‘hey we have to come out in the second half with a little bit more fire and intensity than we did in the beginning of the game,'” Kaar said. “I was very pleased with the second half. First half, not so much, but we talked about things we wanted to work on. Seeing more combinations not just try to bomb it over the top. More combinations, finding feet and being very aggressive in our offensive third.”
The Millionaires dominated Mifflin County in both halves, but especially the final 40 minutes in which Williamsport rifled nine shots — seven on goal — and never let Mifflin County counter. The Huskies had just three shots the entire game, only one of which was on goal. And none of Mifflin County’s three attempted shots were from inside the 18 as Williamsport forced the Huskies to fire from 20 yards or deeper.
Williamsport scored its final goal of the game with 17:28 to play when Pool rifled a shot from outside the 18 to the far right post for a 4-0 lead. It was also Poole’s third goal of the game as he scored Willliamsport’s first goal 14 minutes into the game.
“One goal was ugly, but we’ll take those. I don’t care how pretty it is,” Kaar said with a laugh. “One PK and his third goal was pretty. He’s a kid that has a very powerful leg and he doesn’t need to really wind up like many others do. He can pop it from 30 and out.”
Williamsport had chances to increase its lead, but unlucky bounces prevented a few goals.
in the first half with 7:33 remaining, Brown got inside of the 18 and took a shot to the left post past Mifflin County goalie Joel Beamer. The ball was inches from being a goal when a Mifflin County defender cleared it at the last possible moment to keep it a 1-0 game prior to halftime.
And with 8:04 to play, it was Brayden Ungard who had a perfect header from outside of the 6-yard box that landed behind Beamer, but rolled parallel to the goal line and didn’t go in, keeping it a 4-0 Millionaires game.
